Autumn in Japan does not arrive everywhere at once. Hokkaido can already be deep into color while city parks farther south are still mostly green. Mountains turn before nearby lowlands, and one warm stretch of weather can shift the timing again.
That matters even more in 2026. The Japan Weather Association’s first forecast, released on October 1, says peak foliage is expected to be broadly around normal or later than normal nationwide. At the same time, parts of northern Japan’s mountains have already been moving earlier. 1
The useful version of the forecast.
If you are planning a trip, the headline is not “autumn is late everywhere.” It is more uneven than that.
Sounkyo in Hokkaido and Oirase Gorge in Aomori were among the places where coloring had progressed earlier than usual by the time the forecast was released.
Eastern and western Japan are the areas where warmer conditions are most likely to push some lower elevation spots later than usual.
A red mountain in early October does not mean Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto is about to peak too. Elevation and latitude make a huge difference.
North, east and west are telling different stories.
Northern Japan: mostly normal, with a few early movers.
Hokkaido and Tohoku are expected to be broadly around normal. Because parts of September were cooler than usual, some mountain locations started coloring early. The forecast also pointed to early October cold helping colors move along in mountain areas and some lower locations. 1
Eastern Japan: normal to later than normal.
Kanto Koshin, Hokuriku and Tokai are expected to see a mix of normal and later timing. High elevation places can move sooner, but warmer conditions into November are expected to slow many other spots. 1
Western Japan: patience may pay off.
Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu are also expected to run around normal or later than normal. The main reason is the expectation for relatively warm conditions continuing into November. 1
Why can warm weather make the colors arrive later?
Autumn color timing is strongly tied to temperature.
The Japan Weather Association explains that colder autumn temperatures tend to bring peak foliage forward, while warmer temperatures tend to delay it. Its forecast method uses the relationship between past maple-color dates and temperature data, together with observed and forecast temperatures for 2026. 1
Cooler autumn = earlier color. Warmer autumn = later color. And altitude matters too. The association specifically notes that higher elevation places are expected to peak earlier than the broader regional forecast.
So how should you plan a 2026 autumn trip?
Avoid planning the whole trip around one national “peak date.” Japan’s autumn season naturally moves from colder northern and mountainous areas toward lower and more southerly places. 3
Northern and high altitude locations are the better bet early in the season.
The forecast is still evolving, especially for mountain and northern areas.
JNTO describes November as prime autumn color season across much of Japan.
Lower elevations can be much later than nearby mountains.
If foliage is a major reason for your trip, check the current spot-by-spot forecast again a few days before you travel. This is one of those plans where a fresh update is more useful than a screenshot saved a month ago.
What about Tokyo and Kyoto?
For big city trips, the important thing is not to compare them with northern mountain photos you see online in early October.
JNTO notes that many Tokyo ginkgo displays are typically enjoyed from mid-November into early December. The 2026 eastern Japan outlook is normal to late, so there is no strong reason to expect an unusually early city peak right now. 5
Those are planning clues, not promises. The 2026 spot-level picture will become clearer as the season progresses.
This forecast is supposed to change.
That is not a flaw. It is how seasonal forecasting works.
The Japan Weather Association says it plans to update its 2026 foliage outlook three to four times through November on tenki.jp, with additional commentary from meteorologists as conditions develop. 1 2

A few quick questions before you plan around the leaves.
Does “later than normal” mean autumn will be bad?
No. It refers to timing, not whether the foliage will be beautiful. The October 1 forecast is mainly about when peak color is expected relative to normal timing. 1
Why do mountain areas turn before nearby cities?
Higher elevation areas are colder, and the Japan Weather Association notes that higher places are expected to reach peak color earlier than the broader regional timing. 1
Is November still a good month for autumn leaves?
Yes. JNTO describes November as a major autumn foliage month for much of Japan, with city and temple areas in many regions becoming especially attractive then. 5
Where should I check again before traveling?
The Japan Weather Association’s tenki.jp foliage pages are scheduled to keep updating the 2026 outlook through November. 2
If you remember only three things...
Japan does not peak all at once. North, altitude and local weather matter.
2026 currently leans normal to late overall. Some northern mountain areas are the exception.
